Sure I’m only 25 (turning 26 this week!), but when Sarah asked me to share my thoughts on what I’ve learned in my twenties, I quickly thought back to when I was I was a 20-year-old sophomore in college, and how much I’ve changed since then. I actually feel like I’m a completely different person just 6 years later. Here are a few of my most valuable lessons learned:

I actually feel like I’m a completely different person just 6 years later. Here are a few of my most valuable lessons learned:
+you will find someone who loves you with everything he has, treats you right and wants to spend the rest of his life with you. Don’t settle for anything less than that.
+traveling is the best investment you can make. Sure, you’re young and you’re not making much money, but the value you gain from the experience of exploring new places is worth pinching pennies on other things.
+today is our only guarantee. just because you’re young doesn’t mean you’ve got time to waste on people who don’t appreciate you and jobs you hate. live each day like it’s your last.
+be thankful. Grateful people are happier. It’s easy to focus on the crappy stuff sometimes, but try to remember how blessed you are.
+“Comparison is the thief of joy” – Theodore Roosevelt. In the age of Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and blogs where we all put our best face forward and rarely brag about the fight we had with our husband or our bad hair day, it’s important to stay focused on your life and stop comparing yourself to others – it’s detrimental to your life and happiness!
+don't worry about the number of friends you have - quality over quantity.
+do what makes you happy – even if that’s not the “cool” thing to do. take pride in knowing what you like and what brings you joy. the people who matter will accept you for who you are and won’t try to change you.

This is such a wonderful series! If you ever need anyone else, I would love to participate! It is so fun to see some of my favorite blogs featured on yours. Hope you have a wonderful day!

ReplyDeleteVery wise words there Liz, I agree with everything, even if I still haven't found my other half and I entered my thirties last year.
ReplyDeleteI recently met Liz in Amsterdam, as we are both expats living in the city. Over the past few months, she has become one of my best girlfriends here..and I have to say, she is as inspiring & level-headed as this blog post portrays. Sometimes, it IS all about slowing down & really focusing on what matters to YOU (not anyone else.)
