It's nice to have help. (understatement of the century)
especially when children are involved.
My friend Cami came to the garden/wellness kitchen out of the goodness of her heart today.
Here are the pictures of our adventures in the garden and in the kitchen.
Cooking with kids is always fun but a bit of a challenge at times.
{for our spinach pizza}
{they loved writing our names. they thought we were sistas}
{chopped up spinach, garlic, parm cheese, and olive oil on an english muffin = their personal pizza)
One big question-
...why. why.WHY. did schools cut funding for home ec?
If you don't eat right you sure can't be the best you can be.
on a test. at school. on the job.
teaching kids to eat right now can deter so many problems later.
just my 2cents of the day.
Hope you're having a healthy and happy Wednesday!!
xoxo

oh heyyy i just commented on your other post and now there is a new one woo. that is so true! its always best to teach when young. this looks like a great day. you are sooo beautiful sarah and an inspiration :) xxx
ReplyDeletewhy is it on the school to teach children what to eat? Isn't that the parents job...people need to start stepping up and stop depending so much on their state to teach their children.
ReplyDeleteOh how fun are all of these pictures! And I guess it's now up to parents to teach all of the children cooking and all of that fun stuff:-)
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful! I would LOVE to do something like this and hep in a school and with kids! :) The food looks yummy too...love spinach!
ReplyDeleteLiesl :)
Those personal pizzas are just the cutest thing. I am starving right now so they look pretty good :) Those children must LOOOVE you.
ReplyDeleteI hate it when people harp on educators. Nothing infuriates me more when people say "teachers are overpaid babysitters." Teaching is a science! It is about learning, which, if I remember correctly, has everything to do with the human brain. Grr...(sorry for that rant!)
I had a home-ec class in middle school and I loooved the cooking portion of it. Sewing, not so much. I was pretty bad at that. But I still wear the terrycloth pj pants I made to this day! :)
I'm a teacher and am teaching my kids how to do an expository writing. It would be so much fun to discuss sequencing and then actually make a snack like the spinach pizzas. I love the pictures!
ReplyDeleteWHY did i not have a class like this growing up?? This seems SO amazing. I so wish I could come play and learn in the garden with you and the kids.
ReplyDeletethis made me smile and nod in huge agreement-I have so much faith that you will be instrumental in the future views & practices of healthy eating and living to all you come across Sarah. Wish I was there to help you & Cam (:
ReplyDeletei loooove finally seeing the gardens! beautiful!!! :) omg. in. love. presshy kiddies. camelyn i love you too!
ReplyDelete@ anonymous - I see your point. But sadly a lot of parents were never taught how to eat. I think that can lead to a vicious cycle. If they are getting it at home - that's great, but reinforcement is a powerful tool for health.
ReplyDeletepreach it, sister!!
ReplyDeletei love love love that you're doing this. it sounds a little like my dream job. i should join you.
Love this! Such a great thing. Good point, too! Also, I love your shirt (:
ReplyDeletei LOVE this idea. what a great way to really have an impact on a childs life. i really believe that proper nutrition is important and education is key. you seriously have a dream job! xoxo jcd
ReplyDeleteI think parents are responsible, but I also think parents don't always know. We're the product of our families, if we could teach families HOW to cook and HOW to shop right...what a change we could see. Plus, a bunch if spinach is definitely cheaper that a diabetes medication..it comes full circle :)
ReplyDeleteSarah this is the sweetest post; what fun you must have working with these kids, and helping them to enjoy the lovely things of life: gardening, cooking & healthy living! You're such a great example to them all! :)
ReplyDeletei agree with you 100%. /this makes me love you even more!
ReplyDeleteHow fun!! You are making such an outstanding difference in these kids. Its so much better to teach a child to eat right young then waiting till later in life when they are forced due to health issues. Whether we like it or not schools play a HUGE role in a child's life and the message of health needs to be echoed by everyone in a their lives! love this Sarah!
ReplyDeleteI think what you are doing is awesome! too many kids grow up not learning how to eat. teach them why they are young! we need more people and projects like yours!
ReplyDeleteThis is so awesome and the recipe looks super yummy too! I completely agree that a lot of parents just don't have the tools or knowledge to teach their children. Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeletei love the photos, your job is so neat (and the kids are lucky to have someone teaching them how to eat right!) I'd love to think parents can do this, but 9 times out of 10, they have bad habits themselves.
ReplyDeleteThis was such an awesome thing to do with the children :)
ReplyDeleteI agree - eating right is so important. In fact, I'd venture to say one of the most important things in life. I suffer from a bowel disorder, and have nearly cured it with a clean diet high in fruits, veggies and whole grains. Sadly, I cannot have dairy, meat or anything highly processed, but the way I feel makes up for not being able to eat all of the "good" things. You have such a wonderful job - keep teaching those kids to eat right! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post and it's wonderful that you do things like this. It is unfortunate that so many things have had to be cut from education, but it just makes it even more important for everyone (parents, volunteers, teachers...) to help ensure the kids are getting good information, and this is an extremely important issue. Good for you!
ReplyDeleteThese pictures made me smile, thanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteThose pizzas look delicious, kids need to be taught about eating right.

Oh my. That is too fun! Its so sad to see all these funds cut.I just graduated in Elem Education, and it scares me because of the lack of funds that are out there. When will people realize education should be our number one priority??!

This is simply adorable and the kids just look like there are in awe of it all and soaking it up! I remember with such great fondness being taught how to "bake" non-cook cookies in school when I was about that age :)
ReplyDeleteso cute to see you with all the kids! I think you are doing a fantastic job and you are right, learning about nutrition and food should be one every kids schedule in school, it is so important!
ReplyDeleteliebe gruesse, kristina
oh great, the morning i didnt eat breakfast i read your post... looks soo delish!
ReplyDeleteDarling..I totally agree with you. I worked as a teacher for a few years and I agree that we do have to show children how important healthy, well balanced food is. You are doing such an amazing job! Love those photos:) Kisses and enjoy your Thursday
ReplyDeleteOh, I love this. I think it is SO SO important to teach kids how to eat right. They need to learn from someone or they'll never know!
ReplyDeleteYou are so right! It's great to see that these kids got a taste (no pun intended!) of some pretty healthy food and knowledge!
ReplyDeletemmm that looks amazing! And I couldn't agree more, it's so surprising that schools don't make that a top priority. Thanks for your wonderful blog - keep it up!
ReplyDeleteAwww I love these pics, so fun to see you with the kiddos! You are prob. the best teacher ever ;-)
ReplyDeletei bet those kids love you!
